forgeries focus group
The acga established the Forgeries Focus Group (FFG) in September 2007 to consider ways to help counter the instance of problematic works appearing on the art market. In particular, the FFG was established to consider ways to address difficulties in the current legal framework and to develop mechanisms and propose policy solutions for dealing with stolen works, attribution issues and problematic art works. The acga is committed to the ethical representation of living Australian artists. We see the work of the FFG as central and critical to that commitment, and part of the acga’s broader commitment to the Australian art market.
The work of the FFG has focused on considering the issues on a number of levels. These include in the areas of: policing and prosecuting; preventative mechanisms; policy proposals; and market education. In June 2008 we ran a Problematic Art Works Forum in conjunction with Melbourne University. The purpose of this forum was to bring together experts and interested parties in each of these areas to work on a forward program.
It is vitally important that the commercial gallery sector is proactive in helping to address the incidence of problematic works on the market. The acga is proud to be taking the lead in developing and driving industry standards in that regard.
If you are interested in participating in the work of the FFG, or would like more information, please contact the acga by e-mail at mail@acga.com.au.
